Organic Eprints
Campos, Jurema Iara; Valente, Ana Lúcia Eduardo Farah.

A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Hamm, Ulrich; Richter, Toralf; Dahlke, Andrea.
A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives provides practical application of the business and marketing ideas developed from the EU research project OMIaRD. Businesses based on the collaboration between organic farmers often have resources of enthusiasm and considerable skill in agricultural production but lack the means and expertise to develop successfully in the face of rapidly changing market structures and conditions. It provides useful advice on the market and policy issues to take into account, and on preparing to establish a new business with farmer participation, managing the start-up phase, and on into consolidation of a mature enterprise. It will be useful for organic farmers, enterprise managers, and practitioners in rural and regional...

A qualidade sócioambiental em assentamentos rurais do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Organic Eprints
LIMA, Kilvia Kalidia Sales de; LOPES, Priscila Fabiana Macedo.
The Brazilian land reform is a possible strategy to reduce poverty and increase social equality, but it depends on efficient public policies capable of making the peasants selfsustainable. With the goal of presenting the main socio-economic challenges of 33 rural settlements of former landless peasantsin Rio Grande do Norte State (Northeastern Brazil), we evaluated socio, economic and environmental aspects of 631 families from these settlements and 16 “Restoration Plan for Degraded Areas” (PRAD), prepared between 2007 and 2010. The emancipation of a settlement, measured through income generation, schooling level, and changes in people’s environmental habits, was not related to the age of the settlement. Also, the income of a settlement is hardly...

Organic Eprints
FERES, A.M.B..

A Share in the Harvest- A Feasiblity study for community supported agriculture Organic Eprints
Pilley, Mr Greg.
This feasibility study looks at how community supported agriculture (CSA) can help in the development of local and sustainable food economies. It investigates community involvement in farming around the globe and in a number of established and planned CSA initiatives in England. Eleven case studies provide the basis of discussion, along with relevant policy recommendations and areas for future research. The benefits of CSA include a more secure income and higher returns for farmers. Consumers have access to fresh food from an accountable source with an opportunity to reconnect with the land and influence the landscape they live in. CSA delivers environmental benefits of fewer food miles, less packaging and ecologically sensitive farming and sees the...

Abenteuer regionale Bio-Gastronomie - Mit Frische und Herzblut neue Gäste gewinnen Organic Eprints
Braun, Philipp; Kreuzer, Sepp; Bartel-Kratochvil, Ruth; Leitner, Heidrun.

Adaptation strategies and performances of three producer groups during times of change: lessons learned from the application of the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) concept in three case studies Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Knickel, Karlheinz; Lasner, Tobias; Milestad, Rebecka.
In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and...

Adding more value to added-value. An exploration of consumers’ perceptions of improved animal welfare standards in organic production processes Organic Eprints
Marian, Livia; Krystallis Krontalis, Athanasios.
Recent studies reveal that consumers respond favourably to “organic plus” products with additional ethical attributes. The aim of the current study is to explore whether consumers would notice and value further improvements in the animal welfare standards than those imposed by the organic regulation. The results of a qualitative concept test reveal positive attitudes towards the proposed production process. The discussions about fewer standards being sufficient or about options “in-between” conventional and organic standards indicate that the difference in production processes is noticed, yet it is probably valued less than expected. The added attributes need to be thoroughly considered when developing and marketing “organic plus” products, as their effect...

Adoption of Certified Organic Production: Evidence from Mexico Organic Eprints
Hattam, Caroline E.; Holloway, Garth J..
Adoption of organic production and subsequent entry into the organic market is examined using Mexican avocado producers as a case study. Probit analysis of a sample of 183 small-scale (<15ha) producers from Michoacán suggests that adoption is positively influenced by management and economic factors (e.g. production costs per hectare and making inputs), but also by social factors (e.g. membership of a producers’ association). Experience in agriculture has a significant but negative effect. Effective policy design must be therefore be aware of both the economic and social complexities surrounding adoption decisions.
